I've had some good success by using the recommended method of soaking in near boling water, with two small additions:
1. Once I've done the "swirl and soak", I take (sorry being indelicate here) a baby "snot-sucker", fill it with water, and with the tankomizer standing on end, still in the hot water, I gently squirt the water through the tankomizer from the top down. The snot-sucker end fits pretty well over the tankomizer opening. I do this three or four times.
2. I remove from water, shake out the excess, then I do a dry burn three or four times. I don't dry it completely, just enough to get the excess out. I usually let the safety switch type battery dictate the length of the burn (burns for 15 seconds then turns off automatically).
Let it sit for a couple of days. Seems to work pretty well.

I will need to try this... I have a tanko with a burnt wick but rarely use it so I never tried to fix it. So just to be clear... you don't actually remove the wick from the spike plate do you? You just burn the wick from the bottom of the plate while holding the spike? Also, doesn't that blacken/burn the bottom of the spike plate when you do so?

no by dry burn I meant i attach the atty to the battery and press the button. That cooks off residue left on the wick after cleaning with water. Cleaning with water does not get all the juice residue off the wick. By dry burning 3 or 4 times my theory is you get rid of some of the juice that remains after cleaning. If you have a wick that is truly burned, I don't think this will help that - it won't restore it. However, I would try this, because i doubt the wick is burned, the burned taste is more likely due to a dirty wick with too much buildup of old juice.

I was actually referring to clmntch's comment :
"Hold the spike with some tweezers or something, and then burn the wick (bottom of plate) with a lighter. It will burn, like a candle, for a couple of seconds. Once it burns out, continue to burn the wick until it is white again."
I'm not sure if I have burnt gunk in my tanko or not... I'm assuming I do though since I don't clean that one very often.

The wick should be white.

Please do not remove the wick! It does blacken/burn the bottom. A quick rinse should take care of that.
