Clearo tube fix

Postby Slag Thompson » Fri Apr 29, 2011 9:19 pm

Hello vapers, in an attempt to lengthen the life of clearomizers I have found a solution that is working very well for me. Pretty simple really," Heat shrink tubing".

I bought some food grade heat shrink tubing that shrinks from 1/2" to 1/4" when heated. It creates a strong skin on the tube that's about twice as thick as the tube itself. I've used it on the worst tube I have and it's like new now with no signs of leaking. I'm going to put this on every clearo before I use them for the first time.

It's pretty simple to do and only takes a few minutes. All you need is the tubing, a heat source and something to trim the tubing like a razor blade or exacto knife. I used a little hand held mini torch I had in my toolbox, I'm not sure if something like a lighter would work though, it might discolor or scorch the tubing.

I initially wanted to cover the whole tube and have the shrink tube wrap around the metal base and it did just that, but then I could'nt get the battery screwed on far enough to connect due to the shrink tubes thickness, so I had to trim it back to the flat surface. Well, it may be better this way cause it can still be taken apart to make cleanings easier.

Now I have about 20 extra feet of tubing so if anyone wants some I'm gonna make a post in the trade winds. I really like the clearos but, I don't think I'll be using 20 feet worth of them any time soon.

Now that is a simple and elegant solution. I know they use it for electrical works, and those can be found in the electrical departments of many stores, especially hard ware stores.
I didn't know they made a "food grade" version of this. Where did you get it?
A man generally has two reasons for doing a thing. One that sounds good, and a real one.

OK then Mary, you shall have some then, first on the list.
Here is where I got it, I don't know if I could have found it cheaper or in shorter lengths. Once I found it I just wanted for it to be on it's way. Anyway, I figured if it looked like it might work someone here may want some. http://www.coleparmer.com/catalog/produ ... 980&pfx=EW

Frackin Genius! You sir are great! Could make a ton of these with that length but I am sure I could find other uses for it.

I'm curious though, does any part of the heat shrink tubing touch the juice?

I'm just wondering why the food grade would be necessary since you are using it externally to reinforce the clearo rather than as a replacement for the clearo tube - or are you just being cautious in case the clearo tube cracks and you're unaware... :problem:

I am guessing best safe then sorry there... But my question is this... can you use this as the tank itself? Just heat the ends more then the center?

No, the tubing is not really in contact with the juice, it just seemed like the safe way to go, especially if I was going to recommend it to others. Then again, if the tube is cracked it could possibly come in contact. Better safe than sorry.

Ya know, as far as using the tubing for the tank, it might be possible with bigger tube that has a higher ratio( expanded to contracted). It would take some experimentation, I guess.

I might try this sometime, I've got a bunch of shrink tubes that should be the right size. What do you use to shrink them without getting the clear tube too hot? All I've got is a little micro torch with a blower attachment, which gets a bit too hot sometimes for shrink tubes.

Also, I just posted onto AB's thread on clearo's, and suggested using fiberglass strapping tape around the tube. It would wrap around so that the fiberglass strands would form rings around the tube and should prevent it from cracking while still allowing you to see inside.

However, I do like that the shrink tube gives it some "bump protection." You'd also be able to color code different clearos.
