Coming Soon, The Lavatube

Postby Artist Boy » Thu Aug 25, 2011 2:31 pm

I know a lot of people have heard about the Lavatube, heard it in passing or read it on the forum, but are not sure what it is. Well here is all the information I have on it all compiled on it. (at least all I can share with you at this time....)

Features/ Tech Specs:

  • Aluminum body Available in Black, Red, or Silver.
  • 1- power button
  • 1- voltage up button
  • 1- voltage down button
  • 1- activation button
  • 1- LCD screen, which shows the current voltage the device is set on.
  • 1- 510 threaded connection
  • 1- vented removable end cap w/ spring for battery tension
  • Uses 1- 18650 flat top high drain battery

[*] Length: 116mm Diameter: 22mm
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

  • Selectable voltage from 3v to 6v in 0.1v increments
  • Power on/Off Button- hold the button down for 5 seconds to turn the device on, hold the button again for 5 seconds to turn the device off.
  • + Button: On press, increases voltage by .1 increments between 3volt and 6 volt. When you reach 6 volts, the user starts back at 3 volts
  • - Button: On press, decreases voltage by .1 increments between 3volt and 6 volt. When you reach 3 volts, the user starts back at 6 volts
  • + and – Button: Press and hold both buttons for five second to disable the + and – button, locking the device on the voltage it is currently set at.
  • Regulated output which keeps the voltage the same with each puff - regardless of the remaining battery power. As the battery drains, the device will keep the voltage consistent.
  • If the activation button is held down for 10 seconds or longer, the Lavatube will shut itself off until the button is released. To prevent overheating the atomizer and the device.
  • Short Circuit/Atomizer Protection. Unlike the Provari and its E2 error, the Lavatube recognize an atomizer with too low of a resistance for the current voltage set and will drop the voltage to 3.7v to protect both the battery and atomizer. If the atomizer is too low or shorted out it will shut off power to the device to protect the Lavatube from being damaged.
  • Reverse Battery Protection – Protects the device in case you put the battery in the device backwards
  • Battery Monitoring/Over-Discharge Protection – The device will monitor the battery voltage and automatically turn off when the battery is discharged, preventing damage to the battery by overly depleting it.
  • Battery Voltage Meter. The Lavetube has a voltage meter built in, simply press the red power button 7 times and it will display the voltage of the battery for a few seconds. This way you can monitor the power left on the battery before it needs to be recharged. These batteries are fulling charged at 4.2v and need to be recharged when they reach the 3.3v level. The LCD screen will flash when the battery needs to be recharged, and will stop powering the device.
  • Amperage Limiting to 2.5 amps – The device should monitor and shut itself off if it detects any excessive over-current conditions.
  • Vent hole on the bottom of the device for added safety

Preorder list has been filled and the preorders have been already sent out.

Open sales of the Lavatube should happen in the later half of the first week of Dec. we currently do not have a date set yet but will update this post when we have a finalized release date.

This mod is all fine and dandy but, what does that mean for us normal inferno drippers?

How long does this batt last, and what is the recharge time? At just under $100 per batt, it is a steep price for 1 batt.

Will there be a conversion chart for the attys that volcano offers? It would be a shame to continue to pop attys untill one finds the right setting.

I understand every time something new comes out we all run to buy it but, I would need much more information before I bought a new syatem.

an 18650 battery is a 2200mAH battery and the life span will depend on your vaping habits, the atomizer type you use, and the voltage you have the device set to.

The magma and Volcano attys will work fine at any setting in that range, as I have run them before at 6v and they work like a champ.

I have yet to run the tanks, clearos, or cartos at 6v so we will have to wait for someone who has to chime in on that . LR attys should NOT go over 3.7v.

The under $100 price is not just for a battery. It is for the mod, a replaceable battery, and a charger at least. I don't know the full details of what will be in the kit as we are still working on the mod its self so until we have it completely done we wont know the cost. Once we do then we will decide on a final cost and what all comes in it.

Once we get the working devices in our hands we will work on making a chat of suggested ranges for each form of atomizer.

I appologise... I just read my post again... it does seem like i am complaining... really I am not.

I am just very curious about this mod is all. I use the inferno atty and the magma tanks only. Would it be be worth my wild to purchase this mod or would it be better to stick with what i got. Questions like this and what will come in the lavatube system is what we all want to know.

I realize volcano is not sure what the package will be. That still dosen't make me less curious about it.

Guess I will just have to wait and see like everyone else.

I think you're missing the point a little bit. From what I understand it'll be a true 'mod'. So you're paying for the mod (it may come with a battery), but the batteries themselves (18650's) you can change out as you drain them. Trustfire 18650's are less than $10 each from most sites, and AW 18650's are less than $15-$20 each most places. This is a 'boost' mod from what I understand, so it uses a single battery and boosts that voltage (3.5-4.2v) up to whatever you set the thing at. So at 6v the battery will last a shorter time than when it is set at 4v. The reason for this is that boost circuits trade amperage from the battery for voltage output. Generally it's a good idea on these types of mods to use a higher quality battery, and the ones I make with a boost require AW brand batteries because they can output up to 5A of power. Although I am sure Volcano is using their own design, there is a chip that is commonly used in mods with boosts made by Texas Instruments called the PTN04050c. It does the same thing, uses a single Li-Ion power source and boosts that voltage up. It requires 2A of draw plus the Amperage draw required by the coil used. So if you're using it at 5v, and using a 2.5 ohm carto, the carto will draw 2 Amps of power from the boost. That means whatever battery you use needs to be able to output 2A + 2A of power for a total of 4A. Some cheaper Li-Ion batteries have issues outputting 4A of power over extended periods of time, which is why people tend to buy the better, although more expensive, AW brand of batteries for their boost mods.

I have a 2xAA boost mod on my desk at home that uses 14500 batteries, but it requires AW IMR or AW protected batteries otherwise the boost can't get enough amperage to fire an atty. It lasts about two hours to three hours set at 5v with a single IMR 14500 battery depending on how much I vape. So its hard to say how long exactly they last, it just depends on how much you vape. I've drained a single 600mAH IMR 14500 in as little as an hour chain vaping with it, but in general I get 2-2.5hrs vaping normally. So one of the new AW 2900mAH protected batteries that can output 5A of power would fire the mod (if it was an 18650 version) for up to 5x longer than that set at 5v. It's all relative to the quality of the battery you use vs how often you vape.

One of the more popular 'boost' style mods made in the past two years was the fistpack made by Nuck. He couldn't keep the things in stock enough to meet the demand and finally stopped making them, but it was a single 18650 boost mod. People were paying up to $200 each for them and you couldn't even change out the battery on it. Volcano's Lavatube (as I understand it) you can change the battery when it is drained.

I personally am excited to see Volcano bring out their first true 'mod'! I'll be in line for one for sure.

I have only a couple questions I'd love to know the answer to:

1) How many amps can the Lavatube output before tripping protection or damaging the internal circuitry? Most boost circuits and chips are limited under 3A, this is one drawback to them. Not a bad thing, but you have to be careful what carto/atty you use on them so you don't try to pull more amperage than what the circuit can handle.
2) Will Volcano have attys and cartos at higher ohms to match the 6v output of this device? You could fry a 2.5-2.8 ohm Magma atty at 6v in about 30 seconds. I'm assuming yes.. ?

;)
