Inferno T Stainless Steel Wick Mod

Postby gXn » Thu Feb 24, 2011 3:34 pm

Aloha-

I love my inferno T system, but I was inclined to try some 100% VG liquids which are too thick for the existing wick system. I found this out the hard way, after destroying two wicks through over-aggressive cleaning and singeing.

I was discouraged, but began searching for replacement wick materials. During my research, it occurred to me that I might be able to create a a metal wick. The advantages being that it would impervious to excessive heat or cleaning.

Today, I went to a Home Despot and bought a few feet of different sizes/styles of wire rope for experimenting. I was wary of chemical residues, considering the application, so I stuck with stainless steel and electrically-plated galvanized steel.

So far, I have had great success. The flow of fluid is completely sufficient, and there is no excessive drip/flooding. I have only experimented with a 100%
VG fluid so far, but I anticipate this mod being very possible.

I am moving this week, so I am pretty busy. But, in the next week or two I will post with proper documentation of my methods + pictures and some tricks I learned along the way.

In the meantime, if there is anything you think I should be concerned about please post here.

Happy Vaping

Chemical reactions between the galvanized coating and the juice/heat would be a major concern, from my understanding of how these types of chemical coatings are applied. I'm fairly confident that inhaling even trace amounts of the galvanizing coating is not going to be a health positive thing to do.

Nichrome wire is used for these types of applications, specifically to avoid any such issues, BTW.

Some of our more diehard modders may, and probably will, chime in to offer more advice to help guide you in the right direction.

If you wanted to just mess around and try different wick configurations, you can buy wicks at Nhaler, and they come with a bunch of coils as well (40 in all and a bunch or wicks)
http://shop.nhaler.com/The-Ato-Miser-Xt ... Extras.htm

For $7.50

Just an idea and it would be safer than using stuff from home depot than was never intended to be used as food safe.

Roger; I'll stick to the stainless stuff for now.

Thanks. I am also concerned about the health risks resulting from long-term use of something like this.

To prepare the stainless steel strands I heated them in a gas burner until I could no longer see or smell any residue, then rinsed and repeated. I am going to add boiling to the process now, before additional testing.

What I am looking for is a means of conveying a higher % VG from the tank to the atomizer coil. Normal wick material seems to be too absorbent. Perhaps I should look to something like ceramic or silica.

That Ato-Miser looks interesting. Has anyone here tried building one? It would be perfect in the event of the ZA or the FDA ban hammer.

I am very much hoping you figure out a way to rewick the tanks!

In trying to salvage one of mine that was bad, I accidentally pulled the whole wick out. Sure enough, it was burnt to a crisp on the bottom. I have another bad one that has a wick too deep, and two more I am hoping are okay after several cleanings. They are drying now so will test them tomorrow.

In looking at the wick I pulled all the way out, I can't help but wonder why they used a wick that could burn and taste nasty?

Replacement of th e wick is actually quite easy.......the hard part is figuring out the PROPER amount of wick and the ability to wrap it correctly to make sure it stays in place. :problem:

I have been attempting this for over a month....the wick is VERY easy to pull apart and wind up leaving odd threads and loose fluff everywhere.

Keep at it,Shado! Do you need my bad ones to play with? Am willing to sacrifice them to a good cause.
