Juice tastes are subjective - TIPS
by ~Mary23 » Sun Jan 30, 2011 11:14 am
Those of us who've been here a while already know and expect that a juice someone else loves may be something we can't stand. Newer vapers, though, can sometimes forget that tastes are subjective and be upset if they receive a juice that they don't like the taste of.
Easiest answer to juice you don't like is to put it in the Tradewinds section! This is how I've found some of my best juice flavors. Someone else didn't like it and I did.
Your next option is to change it. Dry dripping it with a drop of something else. Sometimes flavors will combine and amaze you. When you find a flavor you really like, mix those two flavors together. I keep large bottles of both vanilla and mint/menthol on hand b/c those can fix most anything!
Sometimes a juice may need more sweetening to suit your taste buds. You can buy sweeteners for juice at any supplier that sells diy supplies. Dilute and use properly and you can fix many juices this way.
You can also use juices you don't care for as nicotine bases for your own diy experiments. You can buy small bottles of flavorings and enhance the original "bad" flavor into something quite good. This is my favorite solution to juices I don't care for, btw.
Always keep in mind that tastes are subjective. They can vary by what battery/atty combination you are using, what you have eaten that day, if you have a cold, and sometimes by your mood. They keep changing the longer you go without smoking. Several juices I really liked 4 months ago I can't stand now and vice-versa.
Another option is to find vaping friends on the forums or in real life and swap. This is fun! Getting juices in the mail to taste test is thrilling even if you don't like what you got. It's the quest for one you do like that keeps the excitement going. It is even more fun to share juices you do like.
If you immediately hate the smell of a juice you are probably never going to like to vape it. This is not always the case, but it works as a good guideline. As the old saying goes, "The Nose Knows."
Nicotine levels can also change how a juice tastes. Rations of PG/VG can affect certain flavors. There are many variables. My best advice is, if you don't like a juice try it again in a week. If you still don't love it, trade it or donate it to a worthy cause. Just b/c you think it tastes like butt doesn't mean it isn't someone else's favorite!
Juice flavors can vary widely from vendor to vendor, too. Vendor A flavor may taste totally different from Vendor B. If you are searching for a flavor and you don't like it the first time you buy it, try it again from somewhere else. Questing for the perfect flavor can be a fun hobby in itself.

I have to agree with you Mary - I was really bummed when they announced that the old V-Menthol wouldn't be available - I loved it - thought it was the be all and end all of juices
But the announcement got me into mixing juices together and trying all kinds of other flavors and over the past month and have gotten into DIY
Since I've had the tanks I've been going back and re-tasting all my juices - I now find that I really don't like that Original V-Menthol as much as I thought I did
- I like other juices MUCH better - it could be a function of the atty, my taste buds recovering, etc...
Moral of the story - try lots of juices

Great List Mary!
Another thing to remember when you are new to vaping, and have recently quit smoking is your taste buds will change over the course of several months. I have even heard some ppl will have a "dead taste" day or two at about 4-6 weeks in where nothing will taste good.
I personally haven't had an ah ha moment where my taste buds just suddenly start working, mine changed in a very subtle way over the course of a few months. I have also noticed that my tastes for the type of juice will change as well. For example, at first I was all about fruit flavors, but now I am interested in caramel or pastry type flavors. The only thing that has been consistent is my menthol, but even that I have played with and mixed to get different styles of menthol.
ETA: I would be interested in a juice swap! I vape 16-18mg, usually 80/20 but I would be open to other ratios and mg... Besides trade winds, is there a thread on this, does anyone know?

I don't think there is a special thread - maybe we can get one going! I think it would still be put in the Tradewinds section.
I vape 0-12mg or I would happily start sharing with you, Jen!
We could get 3ml bottles or those really inexpensive 1ml sampler things like perfume samples come in that TPA sells, make a list of flavors and mg nic levels we want to share, and start swapping! I'm game!

BTW, I just realized that some flavors taste way better to me in the earlier parts of the day. Sometimes by nighttime my taste buds are tired or something and nothing tastes the same.

Those are some great tips, Mary! I have to agree that finding juices you like is always a gamble...because what you think you might like isn't necessarily what you do like and something that sounds great may not taste great...taste is so subjective and I wish I liked some of the things others rave about but I've found there are times it just doesn't float my boat...passing on the flavors you don't care for to other people is a great way to discover new juices (because it is usually a swap of some sort) and to make new friends
Sometimes, finding out that the juice you just couldn't stand became someone else's favorite is a great feeling as well.

Another thing, don't just stick with Volcano juices, sure some of them are great, but ELP (my main juice supplier) has like 3+ different kind of menthols and at least 10 tobaccos, not to mention fruits and beverages, so if you like the go to vapes that are tobacco and menthol, you should check out ELPs sample packs, a great buy if you have never tried them before (a few favorites: Desert Ship - hard to describe, but its a tobacco flavor that i want to say is turkish, not sure though, Menthol - pure mint! and RY4 - a nutty, tobacco blend, great go-to vape for any occasion)

There is a DIYer Trade Thread in Tradewinds, no reason you couldn't use that one, or even start a new one!

I'm almost 3 weeks into converting from analogs to vaping, and I've run into the 'dead taste' mentioned earlier. I've had a few days where the same juice I was vaping yesterday and loving tastes like nothing today. Two things I've found that help get this back.
1) Drink some water! Get yourself a large glass of water and clear your palate. Sometimes it's as simple as a few sips, but you might have to drink a glass or two over a couple hours to rehydrate. If that doesn't work, proceed to step 2
2) Clean your atty's. After a week or so they need to be cleaned, even if you've practiced flavor monogamy. There are plenty of threads on here that show cleaning processes.
If all else fails, switch to a stronger flavor for a few days and make sure you push some fluids to make sure you're keeping hydrated, and come back to that flavor later. It could be that you're dehydrated, you could be getting sick, or a number of physiological changes, and sometimes it's just that you're getting too used that flavor and your palate needs a change. This is a good reason to keep a number of flavors on hand.
