Kraft's new MiO flavoring
by ~Mary23 » Tue Mar 15, 2011 8:05 am

A few weeks ago I read an article about Kraft's new MiO flavoring for water, which mentioned that Capella has been making these flavorings for 6 years but that Kraft is purporting it as a new concept. It's a lightly sweetened, heavily colored, liquid flavoring to be used as a water enhancer.
The ingredients are water, malic acid, propylene glycol, citric acid with 2% or less of natural flavor, sucralose and acesulfame potassium (sweeteners), potassium citrate, Red 40, and potassium sorbate (preservative).
When I saw the display in the aisle at WalMart yesterday, I chose the Fruit Punch, intending to see how it worked as a flavoring for ejuice....until I opened it. VERY VERY RED!!! I won't even use Lorann's b/c of their coloring!
However, in the pursuit of knowledge, I decided I would make a 3ml sampler. Nobody has died yet that I know of from Lorann's, so how bad can it be? A few drops won't kill me, right? First of all, the bottle doesn't "dropper", it SQUIRTS. Everything on my immediate desk area is now stained blood red. Yay. Guess I can't keep the cool container for ejuice, dang it! My little 3ml sampler looks like a vial of blood. I use an old carto I can throw away b/c I'm not willing to kill an atty. I use a disposable soft-tip b/c I don't want to get this stuff near my lips (red is not my color!) I vape it and I swear the vapor is pink.
The flavor - not bad. Not great, but not bad. Since I don't know how much flavoring I added b/c of the squirting, I can't really judge that fairly. It's not great, either. Lots of better diy flavorings out there. It needs sweetening more, too. I would not recommend.
I'm not ready to try it in water yet, but I'm thinking if I want flavored water there are plenty of clear flavorings in my diy cabinet that would work just as well!
It's not a total waste. I'll use this to dye my Easter eggs. Am for sure not vaping it or drinking it. Maybe Kraft will come out with non-colored versions in the future and then we'll retest.

Too funny...I requested a free sample of the MiO...but never would have thought to make juice from it...now I'm sure I won't LOL...way to take one for the team and use yourself to experiment, Mary...

Lol Mary, you're a riot! I saw those in Walmart the other day, kinda wondered about them then but dismissed it because I figured it had something toxic in it for my lungs lol. You're a brave soul Mary!

I actually received a free sample of this product a while back, for obvious reasons.
After reading the ingredients list, my biggest concern was that it was pre-sweetened,
with an unspecified amount of artificial sweetener.
Since I am pretty much a 'total control' mindset when it comes to mixing,
the sample got passed off to the 13yr old to play with!
With the exception of the added sweetener, I do agree that using it
for DIY mixing is probably going to be similar to using a Lorann flavoring,
subject to whatever adjustments need to be made for concentration.
As a rough guide, if a flavoring product specifies a 1.5% concentration level
for flavoring water or liquid, you would multiply that figure by 10X, and then start
a bit lower, just like you would when testing all new flavorings.
The thing to keep a wary eye out for are ingredients that are basically
forms of sugar, gum, or starch, since these will gum up an atomizer pretty
quickly in any significant concentration. Also, since these products are intended to
mix a low concentrations in water, they are typically going to have a high
concentration of food coloring in them, since their intended use is in such a
small dilution level. It takes a LOT of food coloring when you are using
roughly 1-2% dilution in water to give it any significant coloration.
One interesting note on the ingredients is the use of malic and citric acid, which are
added to increase the flavor, and provide a tart/sour element.

Mary, you are indeed a brave soul! I still have issues with inhaling the flavorings. I know - i smoked for xx years, why should I care now right? Well, I took the initiative to quit smoking to better my health, why wouldn't I care what's in it. Anyway, I am no health nut by any stretch of the imagination but what I do not understand is why every single thing has to have food coloring or corn syrup in it. Everything packaged has copious amounts of corn syrup - crackers, bread, soup, etc etc. They even had ketchup that was colored green for awhile! GROSS!
I have friends from all over the world, they all say our food (even sweets) are just too sweet!! Crazy how I can't even taste it. Sort of like not tasting the nasty cig taste until you quit them and realize how disgusting they are!!

Wow! I would have never done that. I can see why you might wonder about it as a flavoring though. The only thing to consider is that Malic acid, when inhaled, especially after heated, can cause burns, extreme coughing, labored breathing, amongst other things.
I would not suggest any try and repeat the experiment. Just because it is safe for drinking/eating doesn't mean it's ok to vape. We need to be real careful.
Glad you're ok Mary, it could have been disastrous.
Let's all be careful, and have fun!

I didn't even notice the date on the post until after I responded, but the lesson and warning still remains relevant.

Its okay on the date thing, and the warning is very important. Thank you for adding the warning and bumping the thread back up, people need to be warned.

Doesn't TPA sell malic acid as a sour additive? Yikes!

Thanks for the headsup, Mary
I think I'll be steering clear of that stuff.
