I think the passthru has spoiled me

Postby fergy13 » Sun Mar 13, 2011 5:15 am

I bought a Volcano passthru after realizing that having to replace my Volcano batteries over the year could cost a bit that I'd rather spend on ejuice. At first, I HATED it, but I think it was because I was holding it down too long and getting a burnt taste and the cord was pretty stiff (still is but I am used to it now).

Then my batteries started to seem pretty weak and as I waited for replacements, I tried the passthru again. I learned how to use it and now I use it all day long. In fact, I need to get a couple of extras and a car adapter when we leave Japan and get back to the States.

Here's why I think it has spoiled me: My replacement batts came and I just can't get a satisfying throat hit with them anymore. I don't know if it was because I got ones with the blue LEDs (my originals were red and it sounds silly even to me) but these feel so....LAME now. I am actually frustrated with them while out and about.

I was wondering if the manual battery with the MAGMA is more like the passthru for throat hit? I do not mind using a passthru in my car or sitting here at the computer, but I'd like the option to be more mobile.

You got used to 5V vaping!!! (Good, isn't it?!?) To get the same effect with portability, you would want either a 5V box mod to use with your current attys, or an Inferno with a LR atty. I prefer LR cartos for mobility but Volcano doesn't sell those yet - or 5V box mods. The only trick is that you can't use the LR attys on the Magma batts...but the Inferno is a wonderful PV with long battery life!

Thanks, you two!

Could you explain what LR is? I'm still learning the terminology and Im still confused by what cartomizers actually are!

Vesuvius - this is good to know. I am really considering getting the magma later. I know when I bought this passthrough that they said it would work with the magma stuff too.

Low resistance is a way that an atomizer or cartomizer is wired, based on the ohms reading. You can also get standard resistance and high resistance atomizers. The magma atomizer is technically the standard resistance 510 atomizer Volcano sells but it's generally lower resistance than most 510 atomizers. So, I'm not an electronics person but the lower the resistance, the hotter the vapor...the low resistance atomizers take more juice to run so they're not supposed to be used on any batteries lower than 450mAh. What they do is take a 3.7V battery and make them produce the vapor equivalent of a 5V device, so you're vaping a 3.7V device that feels like a 5V device...

A high resistance atomizer can take a 6V device and make if feel like a 5V device. You don't use LR atomizers on high voltage mods though...

Glad it's helpful...though again, my explanation of the terms may not be ideal...totally more of a layman's definition than a technically sound one...

Not at all. Passthroughs vary in price, but they seem to run between $10 and $15 dollars. Most appear to be made for specific models of ecig. Personally, I would just recommend going with Volcano's passthrough if you have one of their e-cigs. It's $12.99 and works with both the Volcano and the Magma. Plus, you know you're also getting Volcano's CS, which is arguably the best in the business.
