TPA Mocha - smells awful??
by NateMD » Sun Jul 24, 2011 11:12 am
I ordered a new DIY flavor from The Perfumer's Apprentice: Mocha (clear). It smells like sulfur or something. It's horrible, I almost gagged when I opened the bottle. I have French Vanilla and Double Dark Chocolate from TPA and they both smell great, so I'm wondering if I got a bad batch of the Mocha.
Anyone familiar with this flavor?
Thanks!
Nate

that's a new one on me. I don't have the Mocha but I am sure I would have seen a review stating this before if this was the norm. It wouldn't hurt to shoot off a nice email asking her. Linda is a great person and will get back to you promptly.
I know some Chocolates in flavoring form smell not so good and nothing like what they taste like when mixed and vaped. But I have never smelled anything close to a sulfur smell.

I have several versions of TPA mocha.. some from previous trial batches. I really didn't care for any of them, but what I can suggest is trying it at a very low percentage and seeing how it smells and tastes when you vape. Remember, some of these flavorings are very concentrated, and the end resulting liquid will be much different than the flavoring in its raw form. Mocha is made from a coffee blended flavoring as well.. and some of that stuff in its raw form can smell quite rank. Tastes good once you mix it if you don't over do it though.

Thanks guys, I called Linda yesterday afternoon. She said, "Does it have a skunky smell?" and boy, did she hit the nail on the head! She explained that that is the normal smell for clear coffee-based flavors, and gave me the same advice that Spliner did: start with small amounts and work up to the coffee notes you are looking for.
I've got some test batches steeping now, will keep you posted.

Yep. Mocha, cappucino, coffee... all those I have ordered and all those have a terrible smell. And... taste to be honest. Especially her regular coffee clear. Ugh. Its like someone peed in the coffee pot instead of using water to make it. Espresso, has a very bitter taste, and mocha, I could barely taste anything at all in my test batches... still working on combining to try to see if all of them together might result in that proper coffee taste. Good luck... coffee is truly the hardest thing to make in DIY.

I use TPA Coffee (Clear) Extra. It doesn't smell like coffee but doesn't smell too bad to me. I've heard of the bad smelling coffees before. I mostly add a little of this to tobacco flavors to get a fine cigar taste, but I accidently added too much to a tobacco mix and got a really good Kona type flavor. I can taste this at 3% which is very strong for a TPA flavor.
