voxpunk88 wrote:Hey guys! I took a bit to write up a list of common terms for people who may not be familiar with the e-cig lingo. Feel free to contribute, and I will update the first post continually.
Analog- The vaping community’s term that refers to traditional cigarettes.
Atty/Atomizer- The industry term for a personal vaporizer’s heating element.
Auto- A type of batter that activates by detecting air pressure.
Batt- Short for battery, the power source for a personal vaporizer.
BF/BFM - Blue Foam Modification- A specific blue aquarium foam (Marineland Rite Size U) cut to use as a filler for cartridges, in place of the stock poly filler.
Cart/Cartridge- the mouthpieces of electronic cigarettes which suspends e-liquid. While able to be reused, these are usually designed to be disposable (recycling reccomended when possible).
Cartomizer/Cartos- A type of disposable mouthpiece that combines the atomizer with a flavor cartridge. They are offered both blank and pre-filled. The average lifespan is about 10 refills.
CPH- Crest Pro Health (Mouthwash), a widely recommended cleaning solution for atomizers. (Note: Only this kind of mouthwash works, though house brands comparing to the name brand work as well. Other types of mouthwash are not effective and will usually result in dead atomizer.)
Dipping- bypassing an e-cigarette cartridge by dipping an atomizer into a small pool of e-liquid.
Dripping- bypassing an e-cigarette cartridge by dripping e-liquid directly onto an atomizer.
Drip-Tip- specially designed tips used for dripping.
DIY - Do It Yourself - Making your own e-Liquid with flavors/solutions purchased from vendors on the web. Recipes are available at plenty of places around the internet.
Filler - The fiber found inside your cartridge that suspends e-liquid.
Juice, e-Juice, e-Liquid, - referring to the solution used in prefilled e-cigarette cartridges and sold in units of bottled liquid. These juices are available at different levels of nicotine strength, including non-nicotine juices).
L88B- The model name of the Volcano Electronic Cigarette.
PCC- Personal Charging Case, a portable storage unit that also serves as a charger for electronic cigarette batteries. This includes references to “M-Pack” and “V-Pack”.
PEG- Polyethylene Glycol, the original solvent used in e-liquids. This has been mostly abandoned due to trace amounts of diethylene glycol, a toxic component found in antifreeze.
PG- Propylene Glycol, a common food additive and solvent used in food products and a main ingredient in most e-liquids. While thinner than VG (see below), minor allergy symptoms and oral dryness occurs for some users.
PGA- Pure Grain Alcohol, a cleaning solution used for atomizers. (Note: 100+ Proof recommended for best results)
PT/Passthru/Passthrough- An alternative power source to an electronic cigarette that utilizes a common 5 volt USB port.
PTB - Pyramid Tea Bag - Material from a Pyramid Tea Bag (Lipton) modified to use as a filler for cartridges in place of the stock poly filler.
PV- Abbreviation for personal vaporizer, preferred terminology referring to an electronic cigarette.
Manual- A type of battery that is activated by pressing a small button on the side of the unit.
Mod- Homemade and company-made alterations to the electronics and appearances of personal vaporizers and gear.
TH/Throat Hit- the sensation felt in the throat when vaping. There is a common link between throat hit and nicotine strength.
Vaper - One who vapes, as opposed to a smoker.
Vaping- The act of using a personal vaporizer.
VG- Vegetable Glycerin, a thicker, richer substitute to propylene glycol (PG). While used in unison with PG in most liquids, 100% VG juices are available in most online stores for those of have adverse reactions to PG. (Note: VG is more prone to clog atomizers by leaving behind a gunky residue.)
Volcano: Possibly the single greatest PV company ever created, ever.
501- The model name of the Magma Electronic Cigarette.
I know I've missed some, so feel free to help me out.
i love this. im in the process of designing a dictionary for vapors. trying to get 99 or 100 words with abbreviations and definitions. anyone wanna post more to help out. get your name in the credits

I agree this should be either stickied, or (if you're listening, Gods of the Volcano), fleshed out with slightly more information (such as how an atty/carto is constructed or works) and added to a site FAQ.
I would add 'short for modification' to the 'Mod' definition, possibly a link to Evil Ernie's video(s) on the Blue foam mods (which really are the way to go and the best tutorials I've seen on the subject). I also noticed 'polyfill' wasn't on the list (although easy enough to discern through context).
also
Might want to fix this for grammar.
This one isn't really a critique, and a total aside, but I would bold all the terms themselves also, but that's just for emphasis/readability...and kind of personal preference.
Other than that: great job putting together the list. I wish I'd had this handy early on. This might be going a bit crazy but it'd be nice to have a short glossary (maybe one page) included in the manuals perhaps?

Thanks for catching my bad grammar! Even a grammar fiend like myself messes up from time to time!

Man! Glad this bumped back to the top!! I'd been thinking how a glossary would be a huge help! (I'm still figuring this stuff out!)
Maybe add what the is difference between a cartomizer and atomizer? (mainly, 'cause I'm still trying to figure this out--I've got to buy a few attys and do not know whether to go ahead & get them or if I need to wait on the cartomizer!)

If it has tires or testicles, you're gonna have problems with it!

Atomizer - vaporizes the e-juice into vapor...
Cartridge - typically has a filler that holds the e-juice that wicks it to the atomizer.
Cartomizer- combines the atomizer and cartridge into one unit.

And a couple of technical corrections/additions
PGA - (in additon to what you already have) used to thin out VG to the correct viscosity, and is also added to increase throat hit.
VG - does NOT clog atties, IF it is properly thinned, using either PGA or distilled/filtered water, during the mixing process. If VG is clogging your atty, you're mixing it wrong!

I just realized I originally posted the model name of the Magma as a "501" instead of "510". Oh, the jedis are going to feel that one...

Hey vox, just realized there's one common term missing - R2V or ready to vape- the opposite of DIY, e-juice that is ready to vape right out of the bottle.
