wth is my husband doing to his atomizers?

Postby danalyn » Sun Jun 27, 2010 5:36 pm

So, it's been a little over a month since we started vaping. My husband is killing atomizers left and right! They just stop heating up. I have a passthrough that I use to make sure the atomizer actually getting power and is up. His are just dead. Cold.

Honestly, I have no idea what he's doing to them.

I've given him a couple out of my stash and they've all been working fine for me. But within a week, he kills them! In the last month, he's managed to kill about 5 atomizers. That's gotta be a new record, right?

I tried cleaning the heck outta them, but when I put them on the PT, no heat.

On this latest batch of dead ones, I did notice that they were filthy. I mean, not only were the coils clogged but the threads were black as well. What's sad is that these are brand new! Could he just be an atomizer slob and killing them that way? If I steal his atomizers and clean them out every other day before they have a chance to get that bad, would that help prolong their lives?

5 atomizers in a month??? Is he flooding them? Where is he storing his stuff? Could there just be other things getting into them (dust or debris at work or something)? There are probably some people who may have better ideas..have you watched him use his ecig to see if you can observe what he's doing?

If the threads are turning black then they probably will act dead. Have you tried cleaning the threads on both his attomizers and batteries. You'd need to do both or he'll just get the same crud back on the attomizer when it screws it onto the battery.

I'd have to agree with Chuck.. don't give up on them, try cleaning the threads first. They are pretty hardy pieces of hardware, the only way he can really kill them is vape them dry and white hot and burn them up.

Try the following... start with a soak in near boiling water... I actually boil a bowl of water in the microwave and then dunk em in and let them soak. You'll see the gunk coming out. Once the water cools enough to grab them, soak in some 91% rubbing alcohol for about 15-30 minutes. Then repeat the near boiling water soak. In the end, blow out the water from both ends and let them dry over night. Once you are sure they are dry, see if they'll heat up on a passthrough. If they still won't heat, Arc has posted a method to loosen the metal connector on the bottom of the atty. Simply give it a light tug in 4 different directions or so with a paperclip.. it will flex a bit because it sits on a an o-ring or gasket. Screw it back on a PT or battery and see if it heats again. If it does.. re-prime it and enjoy.

On the last two, I did the hot water bath + tried the cleaning method here...but couldn't because it wouldn't heat. I also tried soaking it in denture cleaner (friend of mine suggested) + hot hot water. I took a needle and scraped out all of the gunk in the threads and did another near-boiling soak and clean again. I've been using these in my PT, which I keep clean and have cleaned again just to make sure. But they're still not heating. :(

He works in a hospital...granted, he's in research...but there still shouldn't be too much dirt around. I know I've heard the gurgling coming form his once and I warned him about flooding. Since then, he *says* he's been careful to tip it up until it dries out. I dunno, though.

He uses stock carts when he's at work and BFM or drips at home. It's very possible that he's flooding them...

I've tried this with it, too...and they're still dead. I don't have any alcohol, but I guess I can pick some up and give it a try.

Black crap on the threads = flooding.

When moisture/liquid reaches the brass connections it tarnishes quickly and the liquid will crust up and be all gunky.
Dripping to much can cause it to flood, even more so if you just dripped and then slap on a fresh cartridge, especially if it's blue foam cart.

Second, check the connection plates of the atomizers and the batteries.
He might just be cranking them down to hard and pushing that connection plate up into the atomizer which will cause it to not get a solid connection.
But that does not explain the excessive tarnish on the threading of his gear which is caused by liquid reaching it at least in the amounts you describe in your post.

Third, don't drop it.
The atomizers are a bit delicate. You can't drop it from a desk or work station over and over and expect it to survive. You're going to knock loose connection wires, or snap the heating element. The wires in the atomizer are barely thicker than an average human hair, they're not really made for excessive abuse.

heh, I have 2 spare attys coming my way as I am going to start dripping myself and I worry about killing mine, along with the batteries. I got silly and ordered 10 packs of carts to have on me when at work and otherwise out, and should be getting my PT this week so I'd drip at home, but at least the pt is sealed hehehe. I am JAG, but I am OCD about any of my toys, computer or ecig related :P
